Gypsy Moth Information

Gypsy Moth have begun to hatch out this week (May 12) in the Bucks County area. Unfortunately, there is no state sponsored spray program available in Bucks County this season. Gypsy moth are an invasive species of insect that was imported into this country in an effort to hybridize with silk worms making the silk worm more profitable. With no natural predators, the gypsy moth has become an increasingly invasive pest moving across the country from it's original location in the New England area.

Several methods of control are recommended depending upon the severity of the infestation. Gypsy moth caterpillars will feed in treetops during the day but will descend down the tree to seek shelter in crevices of tree bark during the evening. Wrapping burlap around the tree trunk will encourage the caterpillars to seek shelter under the burlap at night. During the early morning, caterpillars can be captured and disposed of by dropping the caterpillar into a bucket of soapy water. In areas of greater infestation, homeowners may wish to hire a certified pesticide applicator. For pictures of gypsy moth and burlap trap click on Gypsy Moth Life Cycle and Burlap trap at right.

Households that are affected by gypsy moth who would like the opportunity to participate in next year's state program need to advise the county coordinator between June 20 and June 30 at 215 345 7577 ext 101 so that an inspection of your property can be done in August.
