Paddle with a Purpose: Remove Water Chestnut at Lake Towhee
The Bucks County Conservation District and Keep Bucks Beautiful in collaboration with Delaware Canal State Park and Bucks County Department of Parks and Recreation will host the 11th annual series of volunteer pulling parties at Lake Towhee to control the invasive aquatic plant water chestnut (Trapa natans). Please register at https://signup.com/go/FJKktwy by July 9th so we have enough food for all volunteers!
Water chestnut’s aggressive spread threatens the health of the Tohickon Creek watershed, specifically Lake Towhee and Lake Nockamixon. Hand pulling is a minimally obtrusive means of controlling the plant on small waterbodies like Lake Towhee. We need your help to control this plant and preserve our lakes!
Volunteers will meet BCCD staff at the Lake Towhee boat launch accessible from the Old Bethlehem Road park entrance (see park map). Please bring the following:
- canoe, kayak or electric motor boat as available boats are very limited
- life jacket
- thick-soled shoes that can get wet
- sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
Lunch, gloves, and heavy duty trash bags (to collect plants) will be available for all volunteers who pre-register by July 9th. Please come prepared to get wet and muddy while having fun and making a difference for the environment.
Event runs from 9am-2pm and is rain or shine (exception: thunderstorms/severe weather)
